How It Works

How a Top Team Service Call Works

Most garage door problems announce themselves in one of five ways: a bang, a door that will not lift, a door hanging crooked, an opener that hums and quits, or a door that stops halfway down. Here is what happens from the moment you call to the moment the door is balanced and tested.

On the phone we ask two things: what the door is doing, and where you are. That is enough to tell you the typical range for the repair and whether we can get there today. The exact number comes in writing after the technician sees the door, because a spring price depends on the door's weight and size, an opener price on the model and rail, and an off-track repair on whether the track bent or the cable just jumped the drum. Nothing starts until you approve the written price, and if the technician finds a second problem you get a second written number and the choice to say no.

Step by step

  1. 01Call or book online. Tell us the symptom and your city. Same-day slots go first to trapped cars and doors stuck open.
  2. 02Inspection. The technician checks springs, lift cables, drums, rollers, hinges, tracks, bottom seal, photo-eye sensors and the opener, not just the part you called about.
  3. 03Written price. Parts, labor and any permit on one sheet, before any tool touches the door.
  4. 04Repair or install, then test. The door is balanced by hand, the opener force and limits are set, and the safety reverse is tested before we leave.

Minnesota winter and your garage door

Winter is when most of these calls come in, and the reasons are mechanical, not bad luck. Cold makes spring steel brittle, so a spring near the end of its cycle life snaps on the first sub-zero morning. The bottom seal freezes to the slab and the opener either tears it or senses the resistance and reverses. Grease in the opener and on the rollers thickens until the motor strains and the drive gear strips. Uninsulated doors lose heat into a garage that shares a wall with the house, and salt tracked in on the tires rusts lift cables and bottom brackets from the inside out. A fall tune-up handles the lubricant, the balance and the seal before any of that happens; the cold-weather guide covers what to do if it already has.

Service Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a garage door service call cost in Minneapolis?
A typical repair runs $150 to $370, about $242 on average, with the price set by the part: springs $143 to $333 each, opener repair $100 to $250, cables $150 to $300, off-track $150 to $350, rollers $120 to $250, bottom seal $85 to $200, tune-up $75 to $150. Those are typical ranges, and the exact price is written down before work starts. The Minneapolis repair cost guide goes line by line.
Do you repair every brand of garage door and opener?
Yes. We service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and Craftsman openers and Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, C.H.I. and Overhead Door doors, plus the older doors that no longer carry a readable label. Springs, cables, rollers, hinges and photo-eye sensors are sized to the door, not the brand, so the common parts are on the truck whatever name is on the panel.
Should I repair my garage door or replace it?
Repair it if the panels are sound and the problem is a spring, cable, roller or opener: those are $100 to $370 fixes on a door that can run another decade. Replace it when several panels are cracked or rusted, the door is uninsulated on an attached garage, or repairs are stacking up every winter. A new insulated door runs $1,188 to $4,536 installed with financing available. Our repair or replace guide walks through the decision.
Why does my garage door only act up in winter, and can a tune-up prevent it?
Because cold finds worn parts. Steel springs get brittle and snap, the bottom seal freezes to the slab and makes the opener reverse, thick grease strains the motor, and ice and salt corrode cables. A fall tune-up ($75 to $150) replaces the lubricant with a cold-rated one, checks the balance and the seal, and catches a spring that is about to go. It does not make a 15-year-old spring young again, so if the technician finds one at the end of its life you get a written price to replace it, and the choice.
