A sectional door comes off its track for one of three reasons. Most often a lift cable snaps or slips off its drum on one side; that side drops, the door racks in the opening, and the rollers on the high side walk out of the channel. Second is a bump: a bumper, a mower or a bike against the bottom section or the vertical track, which pinches the channel so the rollers cannot pass. Third is wear: nylon rollers with worn stems, a cracked hinge, or a loose jamb bracket let a section move sideways until a roller finds the edge.
The order matters. We clamp the door so it cannot move, take the spring tension off if the door is badly racked, reset or replace the rollers, replace the cable pair when a cable caused it, straighten or replace the bent track and square it to the jamb, then wind the springs, balance the door and reset the opener's travel and force. Why Doors Jump the Track in a Minneapolis Winter
