Where the Heat Goes in an Attached Garage in January
A 16x7 door is the biggest hole in the house. Uninsulated, it is a sheet of steel at outdoor temperature: frost forms on the inside, the air next to it drops toward zero, and that cold soaks through the shared wall and ceiling into the kitchen, the mudroom and any bedroom above. The furnace runs longer, pipes in the garage wall risk freezing, and the car starts cold.

Conduction Through the Face
Steel conducts heat fast. A foam core between two skins slows the flow, which is what the R-value measures. Polyurethane does more per inch than polystyrene.
Air Leaks Around the Edges
Most cold gets in around the door, not through it: a shrunken bottom seal, dried side stops, a gap at the top section. We reseal the perimeter with every insulated door.
The Room Above the Garage
A bedroom or bonus room over the garage sits on a cold ceiling. R-12 or better under it, plus a sealed door, keeps that floor and that room noticeably warmer.
Wind Load and Door Flex
Wind on an uninsulated 16x7 door bows the sections, opens the seals and pops rollers. A foam core plus struts keeps the door flat in a February wind.

Polystyrene or Polyurethane
Polystyrene is a foam board; polyurethane is foam injected and bonded to both skins, stronger and higher R per inch. The quote shows both.
