Spring steel is a fatigue part: every cycle flexes the wire and adds microscopic wear, and the cold finishes what the cycles started. Below about 0°F the steel contracts and loses some of its ductility, so a spring at 9,000 cycles that would have lasted until spring cracks at the first flex of a January morning.
