Most people hear it before they see it: a single loud bang from the garage, often compared to a firecracker or something falling. That is months of stored tension leaving the coil in a fraction of a second. Here is how to confirm it without touching the door.

Look for the gap: a broken torsion spring shows a clean 1 to 2 inch separation in the coil above the door.

The opener strains or quits: it hums, lifts a few inches, then stops or reverses under the dead weight.

The door feels like concrete: on the emergency release, a door you could lift one handed will not budge.

Cables look loose or thrown: with tension gone, lift cables slacken or pop off their drums.

The door sits crooked: on two spring doors, one broken side drops and the door racks in the opening.

The top panel bows: an opener pulling on an unbalanced door bends the top section around the bracket.

What to Do Right Now

Five minutes of the right moves keeps a broken spring boring, which is what you want.

Unplug the opener

Pull the plug at the ceiling outlet. This stops anyone in the house from pressing the button out of habit and grinding the opener against a 200 pound door. It is the single most important step on this list.

Leave the door in the position it is in

Closed is safest. If it broke mid travel and the door is partly open, do not try to move it either direction; keep everyone clear of the opening until a technician secures it.

Keep kids, pets and cars clear

The door is currently held by the opener trolley and whatever cable tension remains. Treat the opening as off limits and park the second car outside for now.

What Not to Do, in Order of How Expensive It Gets

Every one of these comes from a real Twin Cities service call, usually from a homeowner trying to get to work in Burnsville or Coon Rapids at 7 AM.

Do not keep cycling the opener. It strips the drive gear and bends the top panel, adding $100 to $250 or more to the bill.

Do not lift the door by hand. Without its counterbalance a double door is 150 to 250 pounds of dead weight that can drop without warning.

Do not pull the red release cord on an open door. The trolley is the only thing holding it up; release it and the door free falls.

Do not unwind or remove anything. The unbroken spring and the cables are still under tension and can whip.

Do not buy springs online to install yourself. Wrong wire size ruins balance, and winding is the dangerous part regardless.

Do not drive under a partly open broken door. Squeezing a car through is betting the roof on a strained trolley.
