Do not run the opener and do not try to lift the door. Unplug the opener, keep the door closed, keep people and pets away, and call for spring replacement. In Minneapolis it typically runs $143 to $333 for the spring, or $160 to $370 all in for a single door, as much as about $530 when a double door needs both springs.
A broken spring is an inconvenience, not a catastrophe, as long as nobody fights the door. Almost every spring injury we hear about happened after the break, when someone tried to force a door that suddenly weighed everything.
Torsion springs are unloaded and wound with solid steel bars. The tools are simple; the stored energy is not.
Replacement is a routine one visit job for a technician with winding bars, and one of the most dangerous DIY jobs in a house without them.
How to Confirm the Spring Actually Broke
Most people hear it before they see it: a single loud bang from the garage, often compared to a firecracker or something falling. That is months of stored tension leaving the coil in a fraction of a second. Here is how to confirm it without touching the door.
Not sure whether you have torsion or extension springs? Our identification guide settles it in ten seconds. Either way, the next section applies.
What to Do Right Now
Five minutes of the right moves keeps a broken spring boring, which is what you want.
Unplug the opener
Pull the plug at the ceiling outlet. This stops anyone in the house from pressing the button out of habit and grinding the opener against a 200 pound door. It is the single most important step on this list.
Leave the door in the position it is in
Closed is safest. If it broke mid travel and the door is partly open, do not try to move it either direction; keep everyone clear of the opening until a technician secures it.
Keep kids, pets and cars clear
The door is currently held by the opener trolley and whatever cable tension remains. Treat the opening as off limits and park the second car outside for now.
Take a photo and call
A picture of the spring and the door position lets us confirm the diagnosis and bring the right springs. Calls before 11 PM usually get scheduled for same-day or next morning service, and you get the written price on the phone, before the truck rolls.
Tell us when you call
A trapped vehicle moves you up the schedule. We can usually secure the door, free the car and complete the spring replacement in the same visit.
What Not to Do, in Order of How Expensive It Gets
Every one of these comes from a real Twin Cities service call, usually from a homeowner trying to get to work in Burnsville or Coon Rapids at 7 AM.
What Replacement Costs and What Must Be Included
Spring replacement is a standard, well priced job, which makes it easy to sanity check a quote. Typical Minneapolis ranges, written quote first, from our spring repair service:
| Job | Typical Minneapolis cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| One spring, materials and labor | $143 to $333 | Sized to your door's weight and track |
| Single door, all in | $160 to $370 | The most common 9x7 door call |
| Double door, two springs | Up to about $530 | Both springs replaced together on a 16x7 |
| High cycle upgrade | Modest premium per spring | 25,000 cycle rating instead of 10,000 |
A proper job includes correctly sized springs, both springs replaced on a two spring door, a cable and drum inspection, and a balance test before the truck leaves. If a phone quote sounds dramatically cheaper than these numbers, read our guide to the spring repair bait-and-switch before anyone comes out. And if winter is coming, know that cold mornings are when tired springs let go: spring steel gets brittle as temperatures drop, which is why the first cold snap fills our schedule every year. Booking is at the contact page or by phone.
