Every job starts the same way. The technician looks at the door, then hands you a written price for parts and labor before a tool comes out of the van. If something else turns up once the door is apart, you get a second written number and the choice to say no.
The reason this matters in garage doors specifically is the spring bait-and-switch: an ad promises a cheap service call, the technician takes the door apart, and the real price arrives after the fact. Our answer is plain. The typical ranges are printed on this site (garage door repair runs $150 to $370 in Minneapolis, spring replacement $143 to $333 per spring, opener repair $100 to $250), the technician looks at your door, and you get one written number before any work. Parts by name, the labor, any permit the city requires (Minneapolis permits start around $50 where one is needed), and the total you will pay. A quote is for the door the technician inspected. What a service-area business actually is
A service-area business is a contractor that works at the customer's address and does not run a store. That is the natural shape of garage door work. The door is bolted to the house, the springs are wound on a shaft above it, and the opener hangs from the ceiling joists. None of it can be carried to a counter. The technician has to come to the garage, look at the door in place, and fix it there. A showroom mostly helps a company sell new doors, and a sample board and the manufacturer's door designer on a tablet do that job in your driveway.

Two reasons. First, the calls that matter most in this trade are repairs: a torsion spring that snapped at 6 AM, a lift cable off the drum, an opener that hums and quits, a door hanging crooked in the track. Those calls need a stocked van and a technician who can get there today, not a retail lease. Second, the cost of a storefront does not disappear; it ends up in the price of every spring and every opener. We would rather keep the office small and put the money into the van and the parts on it.

Inside the metro, same-day service is available most days, and calls with a car trapped or a door stuck open are scheduled first. Minnesota winter is why the van is stocked the way it is
Cold is hard on a garage door in specific, mechanical ways. Spring steel gets brittle below zero, and the first cold mornings of the year are when tired springs snap, usually at the first opening of the day. Meltwater runs under the bottom seal and freezes it to the slab, and an opener that pulls against a frozen seal can tear the seal or strip its own drive gear. Grease thickens, so an opener that was fine in October strains in January. Salt and ice work on the lift cables and bottom brackets until a strand lets go, and uninsulated doors on attached garages pull heat out of the house.
