When a door starts down then reverses with flashing lights, it is the photo eye safety sensors in the majority of cases: blocked, dirty or knocked out of alignment. Clean and square them first. If a technician is needed, sensor and adjustment calls in Minneapolis typically run $100 to $150.
The reverse behavior is a safety feature doing its job, not a defect. The opener refuses to close over what might be a child, a pet or a bumper. Fix what the sensors are complaining about rather than looking for a way to override them.
A door that stops just short of the slab, or reverses off it, is usually a sensor, limit or ice problem rather than a broken door.
The photo eyes sit about six inches off the floor on each side of the opening, exactly where snow, cobwebs and shovels find them.
Start with the Photo Eyes, Always
Every opener installed since 1993 has two small sensors low on the tracks that beam an invisible line across the opening. Break the beam and the door will not close, or reverses immediately and flashes the opener lights. This one component explains most of the won't close calls we run from Richfield to Plymouth.
Clear the beam
A shovel handle, a trash bin, a bike tire, drifted snow. Anything in the sensor line, even at ankle height, holds the door open. Clear the floor along both tracks first.
Clean both lenses
Dust, cobwebs and winter road film cloud the little lenses. A soft dry cloth is enough. In cold snaps, condensation and frost can fog them; a gentle wipe fixes what looks like a dead sensor.
Check the indicator lights
Each sensor has a small LED. On most brands, one steady light on each unit means aligned; a dark or blinking receiver means the beam is broken or the pair is out of square.
Re-square a bumped bracket
Sensors live at shin height and get kicked, shoveled and clipped by bins. Loosen the wing nut, aim the sensor at its partner until the LED goes steady, and retighten.
Look at the wiring
Stapled low voltage wires get pinched by ladders and chewed by mice, a real hazard in detached garages. A broken wire means the opener assumes the worst and refuses to close.

The Winter Version of This Problem
From November to March, won't close calls in the Twin Cities pick up a seasonal flavor. An ice ridge forms where meltwater pools at the threshold, and the door reverses off it exactly as if it hit a toy. Snow blown against a sensor, or frost fogging a lens at dawn, breaks the beam. The force setting tuned in September is too light once cold grease stiffens the rollers and rail. And a door that froze to the slab overnight may have strained a cable when the opener pulled, leaving it crooked enough to bind partway down.
The first three have five minute fixes: chip the ridge, brush the sensor, wipe the lens, and have the force and limits set once for winter conditions. A fall $75 to $150 tune-up that includes a bottom seal check and winter force settings prevents most of this, and a new bottom seal that actually seals keeps the meltwater, and therefore the ice ridge, out of the threshold in the first place.
Where the DIY Line Sits, and What a Visit Costs
Cleaning lenses, clearing the beam, re-squaring a bracket, chipping ice: all safely yours.
